Well- I don't tend to assign color when I read, and I don't remember the characters being described (I might have missed it) but I assume you mean Cinna and Rue. First off - in the book they refer to her as like Katniss' sistern, Prim. Since I read the book after the first trailer I saw several months ago, I saw Katniss and her sister as white and therefore envisioned Rue as such. However there was no basis for that other than that I knew Jennifer Lawrence was Katniss. I think the girl did an astounding job. It was a very tough part to play and she nailed it, in my opinion. Small, young but smart and a formidable foe.

As for Cinna, the expetation I had was different. I envisioned Cinna as somewhat meek, not in character but given his skills and role I just didn't think of him as a commanding physical presence. I thought he was using his skills to aid the rebellion (not really addressed until book 2) but wasn't really a fighting force. However, Lenny Cravitz did such a phenomenal job that I can't think of the character in any other way now, which has little to do with his color anyway O_O. Although I knew Cinna was part of the rebellion, or at least sympathetic (remember adult themes and politics are largely left out so we have no idea how involved he actually is-just that he is obviously supportive to Katniss) I left the movie feeling like he was not only a leader, but a force to be reckoned with. I keep getting off topic here - so......I think that if anyone brought that to the character, then they should be cast regardless of what color people think he 'should' be (or is? maybe I did miss that in the book). I can't imagine the part being played by anyone else now, with his quiet strength and physical grace (or..whatever the manly version of grace is).

Ultimately...I didn't even realize there was an uproar over it O_O. the ONLY thing in regards to race that I noticed was that entire districts seemed to be largely segregated. that was a little odd but I suppose it happens naturally (refer: chinatown, japantown, little italy etc etc etc) so maybe that's what happened. It was just a weird thing to see.

So it sounds like you read and watched the movie. what was your take on the casting of African American actors in certain roles? From the excerpt and screen shots out on the web I think people have been overreacting. Who cares about that. Writers right a fictional story and there isn't always an exact match to a real person. Lets just find the best possible actor or actress for the role and make sure the personality and essence of the character comes through instead of worrying that the character on screen isn't the same as in the book.

I need to have alerts set or something.....I had no idea you replied :)

To answer your question, there is no reason, it was just curiosity. I can definitely see why it would be hard to clasify too. I suppose my own personal definition would be that independent is art for art's sake with financial gain/personal advancement as secondary or even less as the reason for the making of the film. Not to say there aren't blockbusters that really make you think or small productions that are just terrible attempts at being more than what they are.

I would probably define foreign as a film that would bring a culture, language, actors and story that is not my own. I guess if it was a Canadian film with the intent of looking, feeling and essentially being an American Hollywood Blockbuster my definition might get blurred. But, to me a foreign film is simply something that is not made or written with the intention of being American. In my mind I think of a foreign film as being a window into another culture, good or bad, blockbuster or documentary.

Does that

Dude, have you SEEN Sponge Bob? LOL! Don't discount the kids just yet, Tom and Jerry, Popeye and Bugs are still known in this house and I as much as I hate the Sponge, it is a bit truer to pure entetrainment for entertainment's sake. You're right of course, too much warm fuzzy and educational is forced down kids' throats these days. It's a difficult place to be though - I want my girls to stay kids as long as they can and these days that is hard. One of the few ways is letting them watch truly innocent kid shows.

And for the record, I LOVE the Airbender series for it's quality animation, deep yet very funny stories and for putting high morals under the microscope and making the 'good' characters get their hands dirty. We're on the third time through the whole series right now and I still enjoy ~almost~ every episode.

I'm going to answer your question with another question. What is your definition of independent? If it is a movie not being distributed by an MMPC or size of the budget? This film I would classify as indy but it does not have an indy look or feel to it. Michael Polish has directed his fair share of movies but the budget is very minimal. I would be surprised if the movie cost more than a couple of million given the camera that they used lens rentals, and getting the cast and very small crew to Paris. Also the fact that most of the shots are handheld or exteriors plus the low light capabilities of the Red Epic, which I am assuming the film was shot on, this cut down on rentals and budget as well. Longwinded I know but what did you expect?

And second question, what is your definition of foreign? Yes this film was shot in France and yes some of the dialogue is in French however most of the dialogue is in English.

Now I have a question just for kicks and my own curiosity, why do either of these things matter to you watching the movie?

Great post Niki. I don't think this a bad thing at all. I think that whole point of a family movie night is to spend time together and enjoy some entertainment together. I think we might even go a little overboard here and focus too much on just movies, but there are lots of great TV shows out there as well. Especially with streaming the shows turn into a very long movie. Keep this up an can't wait to see what you have for this week.

Your guess is as good as mine. I have another one to release that I hated and it took me two viewings to finish as well for some reason it bothers me that I have unfinished movies in the recently viewed section. Especially if I haven't seen it already. Must be Jake's influence.

I like when they add a little adult humor to keep everybody chuckling...

Fun for kids=terror of a 9 yr old at the viking attack. You need to spend more time around kids :) I think this one is awesome for people stuck between being an adult and a kid. Although you bring up a good point about multiple watched affecting your score. I'd give it a 5/5 but I can't say I'd rush to watch it again either. And that's coming from someone who saw 'The Great Mouse Detective' no less than 6 times in the theater on it's re-release in the 90's.

So my guy may be Hugh Jackman, though admitedly I haven't seen that many of his movies, and surely there are plenty more. Mostly I do this with voice talent more than live acting though. I'll make sure to avoid this one :)

Hmm, my enjoyment ratio for French films is a bit low but I'm due for another one anyway :) Come to think of it, I think almost all French movies I have seen always leave a lingering sadness, or melancholy. Not saying they aren't good but I tend to dwell. I think i'll check this one out!

Hi there :) Is it okay if I go sort of away from the subject? I'm tryin to look at the blog from my new Android phone although it won't show properly (some of the areas are almost completely broken), do you have any suggestions? Should I try to find an upgrade for my browser or something? Thanks for the help I hope! Madeleine x :)

Ok so, besides the schizophrenic audio - a question on the whole monster not being so smart so he throws the girl in the water - I didn't see the movie but does he just escape or something? Is it like (in my world) when your 1 year old wonders off into the busy street, takes the put bulls bone away, and comes back and pinches the older sibling and laughs? That's how I always thought of the monster - and you all touched on it - but since I haven't actually seen it maybe you can confirm that or not???
